Geographical Features

Gunma Prefecture is situated just about in the heart of Japan.

Of the land area of Gunma Prefecture, 6,363 square kilometer, nearly two third of the prefecture is occupied by low and high mountain ranges. There are rows of high mountains on the border in the northern and western part of Gunma and the southern part of the prefecture opens out onto the Kanto Plain with the Tone River, which is the main sources of water in the Kanto Region, traveling across the prefecture from north to south.

While the prefecture is sounded by an abundance of impressive natural beauty, such as an array of beautiful swamps, valleys and clear streams as typified by mountainous terrain as much as 2,000 meters high and Oze Marshland, the prefecture is located just approximately 100 kilometers from the Tokyo metropolitan area, providing convenient access to various areas, thanks to a well-developed high speed transportation network, including the high speed train system Shinkansen and expressway system.

Gunma is currently making preparations for the UNESCO’s list of the 2014 World Heritage Sites in efforts to add the Tomioka Silk Mill and related sites, which consist of four properties centering on the Tomioka Silk Mill.

The Tomioka Silk Mill and related sites are the valuable inheritance properties that witnessed technological interchange in the modern silk industry between Japan and the world, and the innovation of technology that realized the mass production of high quality raw silk, which production was limited for a long period of time.The center of such innovation is the Tomioka Silk Mill, which adapted the silk reeling technology originated in France and was established as a full scale raw silk factory by the Meiji Government in 1872.The remaining three properties on the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage, Tajima Yahei Sericulture Farm, Takayama-sha Sericulture School and Arafune Cold Storage, assumed a significant role for the technical innovation of silk cultivation, while helping the Tomioka Silk Mill to achieve the quality improvement and homogenization of cocoons.
Although the Tomioka Silk Mill, which continuously implemented most advanced silk reeling technology since it was established, finally ceased production in 1987, the factory’s automatic silk reeling machines are still preserved in excellent condition in situ.These automatic silk reeling machines are the predecessor that went through many improvements and tremendous evolution in Japan, and its succession machines remain in operation as the main force of silk reeling all over the world even today.The Tomioka Silk Mill, after all, is indeed the symbol of Japan’s manufacturing as it continuously supported the course of world changing technology innovation in Japan, after adapting technology from the West.
